Workshop Details

In this workshop, we will focus on how to bring student thinking to the forefront in your class. We will highlight different strategies that you can use that make students' thinking visual. Our examples will focus on algebraic thinking, but strategies can be applied to any topic.

Recertification points will be given at the end of the PD workshop after completion of an electronic exit survey.

Amanda Rickard

Amanda Rickard is the K-12 Math Supervisor for Rockingham County Public Schools. She had 13 years as a high school math teacher. Amanda loves helping teachers rethink what a math class could look like. Amanda thinks students should discover, discuss, and play with mathematics. Math class should be filled with student discourse and helping foster students seeing themselves as "math people"

Brian Nussbaum

Brian Nussbaum is the Secondary Mathematics Coordinator and Director of Testing for Harrisonburg City Public Schools. He has taught middle school, high school, undergraduate, and graduate level courses in mathematics and mathematics education for over 16 years. His goals include helping people to move beyond basic arithmetic and find the excitement and joy of mathematical thinking. He strives to create opportunities for students and teachers to engage in mathematical experiences that provide opportunities to build their communication skills, develop new connections, and explore new ideas.

Registration Information

The registration deadline is October 5, 2022.

In the registration form below, required fields are indicated with a red asterisk. Once you have submitted the registration, the person or people whom you have registered will receive a confirmation email (with registration information included) within 24 hours.

She will need to know the person’s name and an email address for confirmation.

Workshop Series Cost

The workshop fee is $149 for each participant who is a member of a school division that is a member of VaSCL. You can check here for member divisions.

The registration fee for participants from Non-Member school divisions is $199.

VaSCL has a no refund policy for workshop registrations. In the event that a workshop is canceled by VaSCL, refunds will be made in full.

If you would like to pay now by credit card or through a PayPal/credit account, you will be given an opportunity to do so below.

If payment is not made by credit card/PayPal account at registration, the person whom you identified as the Billing Contact will be sent an invoice for payment of your registration fee.
