Session 1: January 24, 2023

Changes in the 2018 Standards: This session focuses on the changes in the 2018 science standards and the shifts from fact based memorization to the focus on conceptual understandings in science.  This session will also address the infusion of scientific and engineering practices throughout the curriculum framework (Look for the leaves) and provide strategies for incorporating more inquiry in your classroom.

Session 2: February 15, 2023

What are SEPs (Science and Engineering Practices), Cluster items and Performance based assessments?: This session will focus on how SEP are integrated throughout the curriculum and will be assessed using the new cluster item format.  The structure of cluster items and directions on creating cluster items for your own content area will be the main focus of these sessions.

Session 3: March 1, 2023

Cluster Item Share and Review: Each participant is asked to bring examples of cluster items they created between sessions 2 and 3.  Participants will learn how to analyze these items based on the skills and knowledge in the curriculum framework and provide feedback to one another.  Participants will be able to share their items into a community bank of cluster items for use by VaSCL members.
