Workshop Details

This session will familiarize participants with the fundamentals of balanced assessments with focus on performance assessment development. Participants will explore how to:

  • Unpack standards to craft high-quality learning goals
  • Develop tasks that measure deep understanding and transfer of learning
  • Create instructions that reflect learning goals and communicate clear expectations for student performance, and
  • Develop scoring rubrics that provide informative instructional feedback and align with the standards delineated by the VDOE Quality Criteria Tool

Presenters

Kelley Aitken

Kelley Aitken is a versatile professional with over 20 years of experience in K12 education including leading a school division staff of over 100 science teachers, Kelley has provided leadership in creating, implementing, and evaluating new curriculum and technological programs aligned to the needs of the school division, state, and national standards. She has served as an educational leader at the school division and state level providing mentorship, coaching, support and professional learning for teachers and administrators. She is a Balanced Assessment Coordinator for VaSCL and works with member divisions to implement the use of the VaSCL assessment bank for formative and summative purposes.

Annie Evans

Annie Evans is the Director of Education and Outreach for New American History at the University of Richmond. Annie is a National Geographic Society Grosvenor Teacher Fellow, a NatGeo Certified Educator and Trainer, and Co-Coordinator of the Virginia Geographic Alliance. With over 30 years of classroom and educational leadership experience, she designs curricula and facilitates professional learning for K-16 teachers and museum educators, focusing on Historical Thinking Skills, GeoLiteracy, Instructional Coaching, Project-Based Learning, and Performance Assessments.  New American History is led by Dr. Ed Ayers with generous support from the University of Richmond.
