In preparing students to meet the Profile of a Virginia Graduate, schools are required to ensure that students develop the following competencies, known as the “Five C’s”: Critical thinking, Creative thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Citizenship. This may seem like just “one more thing”; however, during this series of four separate FREE virtual workshops, math educators will discover the close relationship between the Five C’s and the Math Process Goals from the Standards of Learning (problem solving, communication, connections, reasoning, and representations), as well as explore how the Five C’s are an integral part of NCTM’s Effective Math Teaching Practices. Participants will leave each of these four sessions invigorated and equipped to incorporate into their classrooms immediately best math instructional practices which bring the Five C’s to the forefront. Working together on the full implementation of a Rich Mathematical Task will allow participants to learn how to adequately “Anticipate” solutions, “Monitor” student work and ask assessing and advancing questions, as well as “Select,” “Sequence,” and “Connect” responses. These effective practices were first introduced in the book “5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions” by Margaret “Peg” Smith and Mary Kay Stein. During each of these four virtual workshops educators will also participate in and lead number talks that will enable them to practice creating a classroom environment where discourse is the norm, as well as explore the growth mindset and Jo Boaler’s youcubed site in order to combat the “I’m not a math person” epidemic.
Math educators are encouraged to register for the whole series of four FREE virtual workshops, but they are also welcome to participate in individual workshops. Therefore, participants will be asked to register for each workshop they wish to attend. It will be recommended to participants that they watch video recordings of previous sessions which they have not attended. In order to make these virtual workshops as interactive and engaging as possible, each session will be limited to 30 participants.
Classroom teachers, specialists and supervisors of mathematics for grades 6-12 will begin this workshop by participating in a number talk, followed by breakout groups in which they each practice leading a number talk, and then the whole group will explore the mathematical mindset and youcubed.org. In the third of four sessions, the last three practices for orchestrating productive mathematical discussion will be the focus. While students are working on a task, a teacher “selects” which work to share with the class, “sequences” the work in an order for a specific reason, and makes explicit “connections” for students as the sharing is taking place. By providing a sequence and making the connections explicit, students will have their learning path laid out in front of them. Special attention will be paid to how the process goals of communication, representations, and connections apply to these practices. The NCTM mathematical teaching practices involving questioning, discourse, evidence of student thinking, connecting representations, and helping students build procedural fluency from conceptual understanding will be discussed. During this session, it will become apparent to all participants how the use of mathematical tasks can help ensure that all students develop the competencies known as the 5C’s.
Participants need to register separately for each virtual workshop in which they would like to participate.

There is NO CHARGE for participation.
VaSCL Members are given priority for participation; however, educators from divisions which are not members of VaSCL are welcome to participate (for free) if space is available.
